Rustic roller shutter - Spain carpentry

With a simple coate of paint you can transform your aluminium roller shutter cover into a Spanish rustic wood effect.

If you want to give your Spanish property a rustic look why not paint your roller shutter cover. There are various options available to achieve this effect, however the easiest and simplest is to paint it wuth wood effect paint available from most Spanish ferreterias.

Another option is to construct a wooden front to the roller shutter cover, stain it and varnish it. Once dry it can be nailed using headless nails to the existing cover, radically changing it's appearance in a very simple way.

If your fairly handy you can build a box to completely cover the roller shutter cover.

Mosquito Screens - Spain decoration

Prevent insects and mosquitos and other flying insects from entering your property.

There are several types of fly screens available on the Spanish market, the main difference being the way that they are fitted to the window.

One of the most common types of fly screens in use are made to measure fly screens that are fitted directly to the space outside of the window withgout the need for drilling or fixing. However these types of fly screens affect the extrior appearance of the property.

Another popular solution is to fit roll-up fly screens, these can be fitted on windows and doors and work along the same lines as roller blinds. These open via a chain mechanism or roller springs.

There are also sliding fly screens, with or without frames that can be fitted over the windows, or simple material fly screens that can be stuck and removed with great ease, these of course is the most economical option.

Older style spanish properties - Spain plumbing

In many older style Spanish properties there is only one stop-cock for the bathroom therefore if any appliance had to be repaired or replaced the whole water supply had to be turned off.

Not withstanding it's far safer to instal an individual stop-cock to each appliance, sink, toilet, bidet, shower, bath. This way the installation can be used whilst replacing or repairing the damaged unit.

The first thing to do is to turn off the stop-cock to the kitchen or bathroom and then open the lowest available tap to drain the system. Older Spanish properties may have a flexible screw connector or rigid copper pipe the connecting the unit to the water supply. If the connector is rigid copper use a hacksaw or pipe-cutter. These are available in Spain from any ferreteria.

Spanish plumbers when installing plumbing in the older Spanish properties used to place two elbow joints to connect the sink to the mains. Clean these thoroughly and coate in plumbers tape before screwing the new stop cock to the thread comming out of the wall. Turn the water back on and check for any leaks. Connect other end of the existing flexible screw connector to the new stop cock and turn on.
